In the Hours of Light Is Now at the Hotel Victoria
My photography exhibit, In the Hours of Light, is now on display at the Hotel Victoria (56 Yonge St, near Yonge and King), running until the end of October.
A Year Photographing with Analogue Film at Allan Gardens Conservatory
For 52 weeks I shot analogue film at Allan Gardens Conservatory, one roll a week, and held every roll undeveloped until the whole year was done. These photographs were first shown across three different cafes during May's CONTACT Photography. The full series is now together in one room for the first time, and it took everything I had to photograph, curate and hang it. I now recognize the magnitude of it.
How Hotel Victoria and Allan Gardens Are Connected
Before I hung the work in the hotel's Mosaic Room, I realized that the hotel opened in 1909, the same year Allan Gardens built its Palm House, both rebuilt in the years right after the 1904 fire tore through downtown Toronto.
The main entrance to Allan Gardens Conservatory (Botanical Gardens) was closed the entire year I was shooting while they restored the cupola where the historical placard sits, so I missed it entirely.
I love how things come full circle and how things begin to make sense when you really start moving towards your goals. The happy little connections, whether they are serendipitous or hard-won. This project started in a place of joy, although it hasn't always been a joyful process. It has presented so many challenges, the biggest being the belief that this was worth doing for myself and for others. That belief goes up and down, much like the task of being an entrepreneur. So all I can say is that riding the wave when things are going well is so important, keeping the faith when things aren't is the struggle. But I digress.
Visit the Exhibit in Downtown Toronto
If you're downtown for TIFF, this is an easy add-on, swing by the Hotel Victoria and see the exhibit between screenings. And if you're not at TIFF, it's still an easy lunch-break visit, the Hotel Victoria is right in the core. And if you want to make a day of it, Allan Gardens Conservatory is only a 20 minute walk from the hotel, just under 1.5 km. See the exhibit, then walk over and see where it all started. A great little same-day jaunt if you're visiting the city, or a nice excuse to explore Toronto if you live here.
